Partnership to Assist in Training

Apprenticeship-Ready Truck Drivers

Alexandria, Va., May 14, 2018 – Today, the Commercial Vehicle Training Association (CVTA) announced that it received approval from the Department of Labor (DOL) to be listed as a National Standard Registered Apprenticeship Program for professional truck drivers. This designation will allow CVTA member carriers to compete for discretionary apprenticeship grants and fund the pre-commercial driver’s license (CDL) portion of related training instruction (RTI). In addition, the program will expand employment opportunities through apprenticeship in the transportation and logistics sector for military Veterans and civilians alike.

“The apprenticeship designation is an important step to have truck driving recognized as an in-demand career by Workforce Investment Board’s across the country,” said Don Lefeve, President & CEO, CVTA. “Our carrier and school members are dedicated to safety, professionalism, and meeting the demand for drivers within the trucking industry. This public-private partnership is a win for students and our country.”

CVTA’s apprenticeship standard was developed with co-sponsor and partner FASTPORT, Inc., the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Industry Intermediary for the Transportation & Logistics sector. As the intermediary, FASTPORT ensured the standard fell in accordance with the basic standards recommended by the DOL’s Employment and Training Administration (DOLETA) as a basis from which the sponsor can work to establish an apprenticeship training program that meets the needs of an industry.

“American industry is the foundation of our country's economic competitiveness and prosperity. The challenge? Significant talent shortages and skill gaps are slowing companies' efforts to expand, innovate, and thrive. Transportation Sector growth is hampered by an aging workforce of highly-skilled and experienced workers and a lingering challenge to attract new and more diverse talent pools,” says Jose Velazquez, Deputy Administrator DOL/ETA Office of Apprenticeships. “Apprenticeship is your proven solution for recruiting, training, and retaining world-class talent.”

FASTPORT President Brad Bentley agreed, saying, “By partnering with our company on this national standard, CVTA will be able to connect these skilled and sought-after graduates with leading employers in the industry offering registered apprenticeships. This co-sponsorship is a critical element to help the trucking industry bridge experience gaps for thousands of new truck drivers, and we are thrilled to help connect these outstanding CDL graduates with real economic opportunity in the industry.”

Reflecting on the Importance of the Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Game

While Eagles fans still celebrate their victory over the Patriots in the 2018 Super Bowl, many remember another incredible football game—one that happened the night before those two famous team stepped on the field. On the eve of the Super Bowl, military heroes showed us their athletic grit and inspired all those who watched.

On that Wednesday, FASTPORT had the opportunity to sponsor the Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Team as it defended its 7-year strong undefeated record against NFL alumni at Concordia University's Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota. FASTPORT was honored to witness the game as well as get to know the incredible players who make up the team, including its captain and Marine Veteran BJ Ganem.

“This game is a tremendous opportunity to show just what wounded warriors can do - that the human spirit is powerful as we explore endless possibilities in our professional and personal lives,” said Ganem, who lost a leg below the knee in Iraq in 2004. “To play against some of the NFL’s most iconic players, whom many of us grew up watching on television, is also incredible. And we appreciate the support we receive from Americans of all walks of life who come out to watch us play in support of this endeavor.”

Ganem had joined FASTPORT earlier in 2017 to help honor finalists in the Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award program at the George W. Bush Library and Museum where his painted portraits done by former President Bush hung within the museum's larger collection. Ganem's continued support of the Veteran community matched well with FASTPORT's dedication to provide the military community with economic opportunity through career matching, so they committed to work together in that shared foundation.

With the game now past and their record still undefeated, the Wounded Warrior Amputee Football team stands as a remembrance for all that these wounded warriors are truly that—warriors. We thank them for the service they performed in their military careers, how they inspire those with their charity football games, and how their partnership is directly helping their fellow Veterans.

FASTPORT CEO Bill McLennan (left) and Brigadier General Jessica Meyeraan (right) display MOU between the organizations with 29 employers gathered at the Pentagon to sign ESGR Statements of Support.

In a joint effort to provide real economic opportunities to the National Guard, the National Guard Bureau Joint Staff and FASTPORT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that delineates a strategic partnership created to explore, promote, and improve military hiring initiatives in multiple industry sectors.

The signing ceremony took place at the Pentagon where 29 employers joined to witness the signing as well as sign their own Statements of Support for the Guard and Reserve. Because military service members have unique skill sets that equip them for successful careers, employers have united to inspire and hire these talented men and women.

Hiring military talent makes business sense. And that military talent does not end at those who have completed their service. Citizen Soldiers in the Guard and Reserves are disciplined and skilled workers who display pride, leadership, responsibility, and professionalism in all they do. They need and deserve great employers to support them with meaningful career opportunities. These talented Citizen Soldiers can find great career opportunities at https://vetfasttrack.org/.

“We are proud to stand with the National Guard and with our employer network in the effort to give our Guardsmen incredible career opportunities. Because employers are coming together on one platform, we can leverage our technology to bring job opportunities to these men and women across the country,” said FASTPORT CEO Bill McLennan. “This is really a tribute to the military-friendly employers who work with us and the outstanding support they provide to those 460,000 Guardsmen who are ready to begin their careers.”

COL (Ret) Adam Rocke, Vice President of Military Engagement at FASTPORT, also signed a statement of support and said, "Veteran talent can be the lifeblood of our communities if more employers such as these step up to the plate and make their commitments to hire Vets and military spouses.  I've seen firsthand the unique skills and expertise these great Americans possess and they are an asset to any organization and will only make the business better.  From the battlefields to the front office, Veterans have the necessary skills to make a company succeed.”
